Painted Wedding Box

This early to mid-20th century wedding box was hand carved and painstaking painted in the Rif area of Northern Morocco. It would have once contained items given to a bride on her wedding day - including household linen and jewelry for instance.

These boxes are typically created from Mediterranean pine and painted red - the colour of celebration and fertility in North Africa. This piece has a floral design with a colour palette of time-faded royal blue, saffron, white and avocado against a rose field. The box has a arched lid - which is relatively unusual in this type of furniture.
