This mid-20th century wedding box was hand carved and painstaking painted in the Rif area of Northern Morocco. It would have once contained items given to a bride on her wedding day - including household linen and jewelry for instance.
These boxes are typically created from Mediterranean pine and painted red - the colour of celebration and fertility in North Africa. This piece has the characteristic repeating arch design with a colour palette of time-faded petrol blue, saffron, white and avocado against a deep red field.
